Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Catch of the Day (and Asians on a Pin)

... comes from my kid.

So we had on 7/19/74. MAMU comes on, and Junior says, “Hey, Bob changed the lyrics.”

True enough, Cowboy Bob sings:

“One of them cowboys he starts to draw
“Well I grabbed the bottle, I cracked him in the jaw”

A bar fight before the shootout. Those lyrics had actually never jumped out at me before (though it may be really common. Deadnet says it was in “some early versions,” though I don’t know how often “some” might have been. Fifty percent? Three of them? Maybe I’ll have to wait for that 600-version compilation disc of MAMUs to be sure!)

Anyway, I thought it was a neat catch from The Kid.

Then he made another observation that I just have to share. In LiG, he asked, “Um, why does Bob sing Asians dancing on a pin? Is that some stereotype about Asians being short?”

"What shall we say, shall we call it by a name
As well to count the Asians dancing on a pin …"

Joni Mitchell slaps him in the jaw.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zp3lJg07u4w

BTW: When did Bobby change the ending to "I left his dead ass there by the side of the road"?

Last night at the Furthur show at UVA I got slapped in the jaw by the elbow of some dancing old lady.

For what it's worth the Judy Collins version from the mid-sixties has the line:
"I grabbed a bottle, slapped him on the jaw"

and when John Phillips eventually got round to recording it himself he sang:
"I took a bottle, cracked him on the jaw"

First show I heard it, Jun, 75, he used the combo approach with these two elements ('grabbed' & 'cracked'), if memory serves.

Just took a listen to what I think is the earliest version on the Archive, 11-29-66 at the Matrix (cracking rendition, by the way)
http://www.archive.org/details/gd66-11-29.sbd.ret.20448.sbeok.shnf
and he definitely shoots him down, Lord - which probably puts the kibosh on any learned it from Judy Collins theory. There's an amusing tale that Phillips completely forgot that he'd written the song until Collins started sending him royalty checks.

haha, i love when you share these observations from your kids.

when will they release a mamu box set lol? they could fit them all on 23 discs i believe!

"Then he made another observation that I just have to share. In LiG, he asked, “Um, why does Bob sing Asians dancing on a pin? Is that some stereotype about Asians being short?”"

it's actually a stereotype about about asians having good balance. but then again the tinier they are, the more can dance on a pin. your son's right on the money lol! don't ever stop exposing his ears to this music! it must be a joy to have young children who don't find this music to sound like utter garbage to them. have they been to any shows yet? (whether gd-related or not)

He used that line and slight variations of it during 73-74. I don't recall him using it earlier or after. Though I suspect there are exceptions. Generally it seems to be most during 73 I believe?

And its "as well to count the angels dancing on a pin". I can't remember the exact story behind this. But it essentially refers to wasting time contemplating something worthless.

Uhhh ... I know. And I knew the medieval scholar reference. I thought it was funny he heard it as "Asians." He had apparently concluded it must be "Asians" after deciding that "ancients dancing on a pin" made no sense. Though I suppose, in a sense, the scholars were ancients dancing on a pin.

Geez, how many of you guys really thought I thought my kid had discovered hidden bias in LiG?!? Dang. Gotta remember those clarifying footnotes and smiley faces :-)

if its any consolation, I get the lyrics wrong all the time.

And if were talking angels, how about my favorite. I always sing "down angel brown's, coal mine" for BIODTL. when it is actually "down in joe brown's, coal mine". There are many others where I still don't know exactly what the fuck they're saying. w/e!

You mean it's not?

Hah, I don't mind owning up to (many many) misheard lyrics. I really have heard that as Angel Brown's, too. Like, until this minute :-) Guess I've never analyzed the deep meaningfulness of BIODTL.

And there are many lyrics that I hear according to my original mishearing. By choice. In TOO, I know it's "comin' around," but I will always prefer my original (30-plus years ago) hearing of "love is all around." Isn't that nice? You can hear it that way, too, if you try ...

Wake up to find out that you are disguised as a squirrel.
The heart has its peaches, its groveland and thoughts of its own.
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the Mormon brings.
The heart has its seizures, its evenings, and songs of its own.

Come in Uncle John's bed

Gone are the days when the ladies said please, gently Jack Jones would you come on me

It's not exactly that it's wasting time, or worthless, more that it's a task beyond the ability of mere mortals and so ultimately doomed to failure.

"Wasting time contemplating something worthless"

Hey, when did my wife start posting here?

And, just 'cause I can, to elaborate on your fine summation (thanks to our friends at wikipedia:

The question, "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" has been used many times as a trite dismissal of medieval angelology in particular, and of scholasticism in general. The phrase has been used also to criticize figures such as Duns Scotus and Thomas Aquinas.[1] Another variety of the question is: "How many angels can sit on the head of a pin?" In modern usage, this question also serves as a metaphor for wasting time debating topics of no practical value.[2][3]

Anytime you can throw in a Thomas Aquinas reference here, you just gotta do it.

You got that right; anyone that recognized so early on that "extinction happens, deal with it", and that if you stick to your guns, you can be condemned, rectified, and finally deified, well, you've seen how that's worked out for me hereabouts...

Right?

"Saint William Tell"; hmmm, abit too much redundancy methinks.

For a change of subject, contemplate this 9 ft tall barrel cactus while considering his teachings...

Hey, enough with the phallic overtones. This is a family program.

Seriously though, about 10 years ago we had a 15 foot cactus that was in front of our house blow over in a monsoon storm and take out our neighbors car. Insurance company thought that was hilarious. What really sucked though was that do know how much those things are worth? We were getting ready to sell it to a landscaping company for four figures just before it blew over.

Scale, my good man; scale. A 50" rod for comparative purposes.

At least everyone I say that to has believed me to date; not sure with this crowd.

There--so much to work with, SDH won't have to try too hard.

Yeah, I know/already knew that one (zero points for being a smart arse [or not-so-smart-arse])and like the alternative (butch Bobby) version.

But what about "Jack Straw". It's common knowledge (like "everyone knows" but different) that when they first played it, Bob sang all the main lyrics (apart from the choruses), and Jerry just concentrated on his day job: playing lead. But, during the E72 tour (yes, 'that box set'), Bob was still singing the rehearsal version (i.e. reference to the "Turnpike") - i.e. check out the Keith's Sept/Oct '71 rehearsals and it was only later in the tour that they settled on both alternating the lead vocals and the 'definitive' lyrics. Evolution in the making !!!!

So, in answer to "Johnny-Come-Lately's" recent suggestion that you could get by with just buying half-a-dozen of the E72 shows, instead of the whole caboodle ....... well, maybe so, but you're missing out on loads of (essential) 'trivia' ...............

too right - yeah, encourage him at every opportunity.

Like a Euro '72 box set in his Christmas stocking, and/or a Dave's Raves subscription on his birthday ........

and if he likes to play as well as listen, one of Jerry's axes the next time one comes up for auction.

Keep on truckin' ......
